Decent People Aren’t On Social Media

You know… after working on social media software for the past year—and through all the craziness of the last six years—I don’t think good, prosocial people are on any social media at all. That especially includes the fediverse. You folks on the fediverse are especially insane, and you’re the dangerous type of insane where you think you’re sane and everyone else is crazy.

Case in point: the fediverse is heavily anti-CEO, as they should be, right? Yet a large reason why the fediverse is pretty much going to die is because of Eugen. The fediverse is anti-consumerism, right? As they should be. So can someone please tell me why I’m seeing janky unboxing videos of Mastodon elephant merch on PeerTube? That is called a lack of integrity, which is consistency in character. You’re anti-CEOs, but y’all supported Eugen while he was CEO.

You criticize Bluesky for not being truly decentralized, but you pretty much made the Mastodon software and the mastodon.social instance the equivalent of the Bluesky app view. The protocol is woefully underdeveloped because priority was given to Mastodon. There are no good and bad CEOs. They are all evil, but people will pick and choose when it is convenient. That’s evil.

I don’t think there is any form of social media at this point that isn’t evil, lol. The cultural damage it has done may have actually destroyed the world at this point. Good people are doing good in the world. They’re not performing decency for strangers.

Social media rewards hypocrisy, corruption, moral performance, and power concentration—even when they claim to oppose those things.

The Internet has been the worst thing ever made, and it will probably be the end of us.
